Trump Leads Biden In Key Swing States

A new survey of swing states from Bloomberg/Morning Consult has found that Biden’s recent polling bump in key battleground states, “has mostly evaporated as a deep current of pessimism about the trajectory of the US economy hurts his standing with voters.”

  • Bloomberg notes that, “Biden is ahead in just one of the seven states most likely to determine the outcome of his matchup with Donald Trump, leading Michigan by 2 percentage points. Biden trails the presumptive GOP nominee slightly in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and his deficit in Georgia, Arizona, Nevada and North Carolina is larger.”
  • Bloomberg adds: “Those results are largely a return to the previous state of the presidential race, before a strong State of the Union address appeared to power Biden in March to his best showing in the monthly poll since it began in October.”
  • The survey runs counter to recent polling which has appeared to point towards a resurgent Biden campaign, buoyed by a significant cash advantage over Trump and data suggesting that third-party candidates may siphon more votes from Trump than Biden.

Sanchez Announces He May Retire As Premier

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced in a “letter to citizens” on Xthat he is considering retiring as premier and will make his decision on April 29. The letter comes after a Spanish judge opened a preliminary investigation in Sanchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez, over accusations of corruption.

  • Sánchez said in the letter: "I urgently need an answer to the question of whether it is worthwhile ... whether I should continue to lead the government or renounce this honour."
  • Sánchez told parliament today: “On a day like today, and despite the news I have heard, despite everything, I still believe in justice in my country.”
  • FT reports that the case has driven political acrimony in Madrid to new heights with Esther Muñoz, deputy secretary of opposition People’s Party, saying: “It is the head of the government who is putting the spotlight on his wife with his silence, not the People’s party.”
  • Deputy Prime Minister María Jesús Montero accused the PP of getting mixed up with the “practices and discourses of the extreme right.”
  • Sánchez’s decision could imperil his fragile minority coalition, which faces a major test at the Catalan regional election on May 12 - called early by regional president Pere Aragonès in response to Sánchez’s failure to pass a budget for Catalonia.
  • AP notes: "Sánchez’s government in Madrid relies on Catalan separatist parties to approve laws in Spain’s parliament. The central government is also trying to win the backing of those parties to pass a national budget."

Israeli War Cabinet To Meet Tomorrow, Discuss New Hostage Plan, Rafah

Israeli media reporting that the Israeli War Cabinet will meet tomorrow to discuss a new strategy for securing the release of hostages and an upcoming IDF operation in the Gazan city of Rafah.

  • According to Barak Ravid at Axios, the War Cabinet, "is expected to discuss tomorrow a new initiative to promote a deal for the release of the hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip... a follow up to a preliminary discussion which took place on Sunday.
  • A senior Israeli official cautioned: "These are internal Israeli discussions. This does not mean that there is an offer on the table from Hamas or the mediators."
  • Amichai Stein at Kann reports: "In recent days, new proposals have been drafted in Israel to try and promote a hostage deal... Tomorrow the war cabinet and the security cabinet are expected to discuss the issue, in addition to the discussion of the Rafah issue."
  • Reuters reportsthat Israel appears "poised" to authorise a Rafah invasion: "An Israeli government source said Netanyahu's war cabinet planned to meet in the coming two weeks to authorise civilian evacuations, expected to take around a month.... The defence official, who requested anonymity, told Reuters that the military could go into action immediately but was awaiting a green light from Netanyahu."

Protest Vote For Haley In PA Sends Warning To Trump

Former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley secured roughly 17% of the vote share in the Pennsylvania Presidential Primary yesterday, despite former president Donald Trump having wrapped up the presumptive nomination months ago. The results are a major warning sign for Trump in a state which could determine the winner of the presidential election in November.

  • Politico notes that, “Pennsylvania has a closed primary, meaning those are all registered Republicans. Her numbers were even higher in important suburban counties outside Philadelphia. By comparison, Rep. DEAN PHILLIPS (D-Minn.), the main option for Democrats to vote against Biden, got 7%.”
  • Axios notes: “Trump dominated the Republican primary, delivering decisive wins in every GOP primary state, but … In the key swing states of Arizona and Wisconsin, more than one-fifth of GOP primary voters cast a ballot for a non-Trump candidate during the state's primary contests.”
  • The protest vote against President Biden, whilst more organised, has failed to register the same vote share - In Wisconsin and Arizona, just over 10% of primary voters selected a candidate other than Biden.
